The nature enthusiast client had a specific vision of transforming their backyard into a functional and beautiful herb garden. The client wanted an eco-friendly herb garden design that followed sustainable practices and used organic methods for gardening. The client wanted the garden to include a wide range of herbs, including culinary, medicinal, and aromatic varieties, to enhance the client’s culinary experiences and create a sensory-rich environment.

They also wanted the garden to be easily accessible and user-friendly, allowing the client to navigate the space comfortably, tend to the herbs, and harvest them when needed. The client asked that the design incorporate water conservation techniques such as efficient irrigation systems, rainwater harvesting, and native and drought-tolerant plants.

To understand the client’s needs and preferences, we thoroughly met them before starting the project. This assisted us in developing a concept design that considered the local climate, soil conditions, and available space in addition to the client’s idea. Over the project, we used several sustainable methods. These included selecting native plants that need less water and upkeep, utilizing composting processes to reduce waste, and applying organic fertilizers and insect control measures.

To fulfill the client’s desire for various herbs, Keane Landscape curated a selection that included popular culinary herbs like basil, thyme, rosemary and medicinal herbs such as chamomile and lavender. Aromatic herbs such as mint and lemon balm were also included to create a delightful sensory experience. We designed the herb garden in a way that maximized usability and accessibility. Raised beds and pathways were incorporated to make it easier for the client to reach and tend to the herbs (images below).

Additionally, seating areas were strategically placed throughout the garden to provide relaxation and enjoyment for the client and their guests. As water conservation was an essential requirement, we installed an efficient drip irrigation system that delivered water directly to the root zones of the herbs, minimizing water wastage. Rainwater harvesting techniques were also implemented to collect and store rainwater for future use.
