Fall Gardening Checklists for the Best Landscaping Results

Are you planning your gardening duties for the fall? Follow these seven checklist guidelines for a better fall gardening experience this year.

#1 Fertilization

Fertilize your plants right at the start of the fall. This strategy helps to give the plants the nutrition they need to make it through the winter. The nutrients in the soil keep it fertile, resulting in a fast start to the next growing cycle the following spring.

#2 Winter Rye

Plant winter rye in your flowerbeds in the fall. Let it grow throughout the winter and cut it down in the spring. It’s a great way to build the soil and get more nutrients into the ground for the spring plants.

#3 Mulching

Mulch around the base of the plants with an organic mix. This strategy locks moisture in the soil for longer while releasing nutrients into the ground and protecting the roots from the winter cold.

#4 Adding Some new Colors

Add some colorful fall plants to the garden, like Japanese maple and Texas sage. These plants bloom in the fall, bringing color to the yard.

#5 Property Restoration

Take the time to prepare your property for the winter. Pressure wash the driveway and pathways around the home if they need cleaning. Repair your fences to keep deer out of your yard and clean out the gutters to prevent ice dams from forming in the winter in cold regions.

#6 Hardscaping for Outdoor Living

Take the time to do some hardscaping like building a rockery, installing fences or raised beds, and fit that new pathway while the vegetative growth in the garden is slow.

#7 Aeration & Over-Seeding

Aerate the ground to let the grassroots breathe and prepare for the rain. If you’re planting a garden or lawn, it’s a great time to start seeding for the following spring growth. You’ll get thicker grass next spring.
